Château de Sceaux - Musée de l’Ile-de-France
This museum, established in 1937, brings together collections of works of art - paintings, drawings, ceramics and furniture - tracing the history of the Paris region from the XVIIth century to the middle of the XXth. It is situated on the Sceaux estate, in the château built between 1856 and 1862 for the duke and duchess of Trévise on the site of Colbert’s former château. Restoration work has allowed the reinstatement of the former splendour of the Second Empire residence and the assembling of collections with a bearing on a number of themes in the history of the Ile-de-France: the Sceaux estate, the residences of kings and princes, ceramics and the portrayal of the countryside in paintings. Of the earlier estate created by Colbert in 1670, there remain the ceremonial entrance, the stables and the Pavillon de l’Aurore decorated by Charles Le Brun in 1672. The Orangery was built by Jules-Hardouin Mansart in 1686 for the marquis de Seignelay, eldest son of Colbert. In the grounds a number of the parterres and linear perspectives produced for Colbert by André Le Nôtre have been re-created from old plans. In the early years of the XXth century, the Pavillon de Hanovre was reinstated to the west of the Grand Canal.
