Chateaubriand’s House and Grounds
With its caryatids, curious double-branched staircase, and two salons and Chateaubriand’s bed-chamber with their authentic wallpapers and fabrics, the Vallée-aux-Loups allows visitors to relive the atmosphere of a ‘charterhouse’ of the Romantic period as lived in by Chateaubriand from 1807 to 1818, and subsequently by Madame Récamier from 1818 to 1826. Visitors pass through a house which seems to be lived in, with paintings, furniture, drawings and works of art illustrating Chateaubriand’s double career as literary genius and statesman - minister and ambassador - and also a man with a vision of the future. Passing from the house to the Tour Velléda, the visitor has the feeling of being in a different century. Thanks to the lecturer-guides you will learn about, and fall in love with, this house in which you will sense a special presence and where some of the finest works of French literature were written, including ’Memories from Beyond the Grave’, ’The Martyrs’, ‘Journey from Paris to Jerusalem’ and ‘Adventures of the last Abencerage’. The grounds, which were planted by Chateaubriand, are a reflection of his native Brittany and of his travels in America and the Mediterranean and blend intimately in with the Romanesque works of art. With a vast expanse of green lawn at its centre, it reflects, in spite of its static unmoving nature, the nomad in Chateaubriand.
