Built by the architect Berthault in 1805 for the empress Joséphine, La Petite Malmaison was in effect the great conservatory of the Malmaison estate, used by Joséphine to grow the rarest of plants. Surrounded by ancient trees it has all the attractions and charms of a well-loved and distinctive private home. The empress devoted herself lovingly to its embellishment and decoration, calling upon renowned artists such as Gilet the craftsman in marble and the cabinet-maker Jacob Desmalter. Its botanist and watercolour artist P.J. Redouté produced his loveliest roses here.
